Symmetrical Balance:

4th Grade
Symmetry Prints
To create these symmetrical and asymmetrical works of art each 4th grade student created a symmetrical or asymmetrical foam printing plate and printed it on the desired colored paper. Farmingville art students then used relief printing to print their design, a printmaking technique that uses a printing block that you cover with ink or paint and press onto paper. The areas or lines gouged out do not print. (Examples: woodcut, block print, linocut, styrofoam plate, etc.) They then carefully cut them out and tiled them together to create a radial design. For added emphasis they created patterns on their borders with sharpie and metallic colored pencils.

Symmetry:

Balance created by making both sides of an artwork the same, equal or almost the same.

Asymmetrical balance:

A type of balance in which the two sides of an artwork are not exactly alike, but are still visually balanced.

Its that time again!

Tis' the Season...

Three years ago Mrs. Penney was contacted by the Ridgefield Parking Authority to add a little holiday flare to some burlap bags that would adorn certain parking signs in town for the holiday season.

This Holiday season, in conjunction with the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce, the Parking Authority will be covering some of those same signs this year to make sure that people know that they can park all day if they want in town in spaces whose time limit is great than 2 hours. The bags/coverings are going to cover the sign posts to help eliminate confusion.

Once again...every class at Farmingville Elementary School in grades K-5 was able to participate.  We used printmaking techniques to complete the task. Students hand block printed each image one at a time on more than 50 coverings.

Please keep an eye open in town and know that each one had one of our very own Farmingville students hand print it! This is becoming a tradition!

Little Pieces...

1st grade artists created illustrations inspired by author/illustrator Leo Lionni’s book “Pezzettino”.

In the book, Pezzettino lives in a world in which everyone is big and does daring and wonderful things. But he is small, just a “little piece,” which is the meaning of pezzettino in Italian. “I must be a piece of somebody. I must belong to someone else,” he thinks. How Pezzettino learns that he belongs to no one but himself is the joyous and satisfying conclusion to this beautiful mosaic style picture book.

To create their own illustrations inspired by the book (below), Farmingville artists first created painted papers utilizing various painting tools and techniques and used them to create an environment similar to the illustrations in the book.

They then cut mosaic-like pieces from the painted papers as well, to create their own Pezzettino character.

An evening in the city...

2nd Grade
“City-Scapes”
To create the City-Scapes you see here, 2nd grade students learned about warm and cool color combinations and the element of VALUE
Farmingville artists chose a cool color and then used watercolor paints to create a background that demonstrated their understanding of creating different values with paint.
To create their city, students utilized a monoprint method…painting each building one at a time and then folding their paper to print the reflection of their building on the bottom half of the paper. Students then added oil pastels to create emphasis and added interest to their artwork.

Here are some finished pieces...the photos do not do them justice!

Literacy Night ART LAB

This Fall our Farmingville community had a ball at our Literacy Night Event!
It was an "all hands on deck" affair. The book fair was open, there was a visiting Author/Illustrator and  pop-up lab spaces set up throughout the school. There was a makers space lab hosted by Mrs. Valleca our amazing Library Media Specialist, Music Lab activities created by our Music Teacher extraordinaire Dr. Marrinan and an Art Lab...in the Art Room of course.

The ART LAB hosted 4 stations, 3 of which were set up with materials to create an illustration inspired by some of Mrs, Penney's favorite children's book selections.
Here is a little glimpse of our Art Lab activities...

ART WALK 2016

A snapshot...

On the evening of May 19th we had our annual ART WALK event which also partnered with our Spring Book Fair. The event also featured performances by our Farmingville String Quartet and food from local vendors. 5th Grad docents directed students and parents through the halls and were available to help with any questions our visitors had.

A very special thanks goes out to our PTA who helped make this event possible as well as our parent volunteers and interns who assisted in prepping and displaying art work!

Here are a few snapshots of our hallways....
