Featuring....Kindergarten Line Sculptures!

Kindergarten
Line Sculptures
In Mrs. Penney’s art class the Kindergarten students learned the elements of Shape and Line in Art.
One of the results of this in depth study is the line sculptures you see here. Students created different kinds of lines using a straight and 2D medium (paper) and made it three dimensional by folding, bending, curling and crimping. They then used glue to secure their curved, straight, wavy, zig zag and many, many different kinds of lines in their sculptures.

Students folded the ends, giving their paper "feet" and then looped, folded, crimped and rolled....

How many kinds of LINES can you see?

Community Snowflakes...Update!

"Holiday parking rules are now in effect in Ridgefield's village, and art students at Farmingville School have provided seasonally decorated burlap covers to put over two and three-hour parking signs in areas where the time limits are suspended".
- Ridgefield Press, December 4, 2014, page 10C.

So here they are.... a few pictures I took in town of the sign covers we embellished. These were taken in the municipal lot off of Main Street. More can be viewed in the CVS parking lot and the lot near Balducci's.

Snowflakes Everywhere...A Community Project.

Last week we undertook a community project!
The Farmingville Elementary School Art Room/Studio was contacted by the Ridgefield Parking Authority who was/is working in conjunction with the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce. This Holiday season to make sure that people know that they can park all day if they want in town in spaces whose time limit is great than 2 hours they are covering up the signs.  The bags/coverings are going to cover the sign posts to help eliminate confusion. We were asked if we would be willing to add a little flair to the coverings.

Every single student of Farmingville Elementary School in attendance last week grades K-5 was able to participate. A winter theme was decided on- snowflakes of course! We used printmaking techniques to complete the task. Students hand block printed each snowflake one at a time on more than 50 coverings. Supplies were provided by an anonymous donor who heard about the project.

Please keep an eye open in town and know that each snowflake had one of our very own Farmingville students hand print it!

"Matisse, Matisse, the Wild Beast!"

As we go into our Thanksgiving break I wanted to post some images from the art room now that we are in full swing.  Student’s school wide were inspired by  French Artist Henri Matisse. The artists' use of color and style surprised the critics of his time and he was soon referred to as a "fauve" which is the French word for Wild Beast. Each grade level created their own work of art inspired by the artist utilizing various techniques and mediums. Below is a sample of the project each grade level did. Most of our display boards have been revamped displaying many examples as well as detailed descriptions of process as well as additional background information.

KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten created their own Matisse “wild beasts” using oil pastels  to create shapes from lines and tempera cakes to add the element of color.

1ST GRADE

First Grade first created a collage with brightly colored paper. They then used different shaped cardboard pieces and utilized printmaking techniques with black paint to create fauvist portraits inspired by "Woman with the Hat".

2ND GRADE

With an emphasis on color and shape, Second Grade created artwork inspired by Matisse’s “Goldfish” in mixed media.

3RD GRADE

Third Grade took inspiration from Matisse’s “cut out’s” and “painted with scissors”, creating artwork inspired by our new playground…there is a great view from the art room windows!

4TH GRADE

Fourth Grade was also inspired by “cut outs” and used color and shape to illustrate an adjective to described themselves.

5TH GRADE

Fifth Grade used mixed media to create a still life inspired by the French artists’ “Interior with Egyptian Curtain”. In this project they utilized a variety of art concepts, techniques and principles including: printmaking, balance, contrast, color and saturation, value and contour line drawing.

International Dot Day

The Artwork / The Process

Students from Kindergarten through 5th grade used different techniques and mediums to create their artwork such as liquid tempera, oil pastels, chalk pastels, glue, watercolor paint tempera cakes and cut paper.

KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten students used solid poster paint sticks to create one or many “dots” in some cases discovering that by mixing the colors they were able to make others.

 FIRST GRADE
First Grade students explored printmaking using recycled “dot” shaped objects to print multiple dots with white liquid tempera on black paper.

SECOND GRADE
Second Grade students first created different sized masks for their “dots” to mask- out areas where they didn't want their medium to go (in this case oil- pastel). They then applied watercolor to select areas in some cases creating a resist technique.

 THIRD GRADE

 FOURTH GRADE
Third & Fourth Graders took inspiration from “ish” creating “ish” drawings with sharpie and adding watercolor paint. Third grades subject matter was decided by students picking “ish” words out of a hat while Fourth graders chose three “favorites” to create “ish” drawings of, including favorite places or foods.

 FIFTH GRADE
Fifth Grade took inspiration from “sky color”, creating their own sky color backgrounds using watercolor techniques and then created silhouettes from cut black paper to illustrate a scene.
