Landscapes

Our 3rd Grade artists took an in depth journey into color for these rich looking landscapes.

First students looked at the color wheel and studied complementary colors- they then selected a complimentary set.

Students then demonstrated their understanding of value creating tints and shades with paint of their chosen colors.

They selected one of their painted papers for their background  and used the other to create their trees. Students placed trees in the  foreground, middleground and background of their artwork to create a sense of space. Metallic oil pastel was added to add interest and detail.

Well...we have really hit the ground running and I thought I would give you a little peek at what our amazing young artists have been working on. Keep in mind this is just one project from each grade level and there is so much more to come that is in the works!

Kindergarten

In addition to slowly getting use to the procedures in the art room, kindergarten has been studying things like proper use of glue and different painting techniques. One of our first projects this year was inspired by artist Piet Mondrian. We looked at his work "Broadway Boogie Woogie" and created our own artwork inspired by the painting. 

As a celebration for our hard work there may or may not have been some dancing involved....

First Grade

To create these mixed media works of art 1st grade art students learned about drawing with Contour lines and the element of Value. this was a great project for the students to work with so many different types of mediums.

Second Grade

These yummy looking ice cream cones were created by our 2nd grade artists here at Farmingville and are the outcome of an in depth color theory and value study.

2nd graders utilized warm and cool color combinations and the element of VALUE learning how to mix tints and shades.

 Third Grade

Our 3rd graders also did an in depth color study to start out the year creating these amazing complimentary color landscapes while also learning how to mix tints and shades. They finished them off with metallic oil pastels for a little extra POP!

Fourth & Fifth Grade

4th & 5th grade students learned about American painter, printmaker and sculptor Jasper Johns. The young artists from these grades created works of art inspired by the artist who is most well known for his depictions of the American Flag and Numbers.

4th graders folded their paper to create a 16 space grid so that they could evenly space out their letters. They then used either warm or cool colors to carefully write their letters in oil pastel...taking up the entire space. Watercolor was then applied in the opposite color family to create contrast.

5th Grade students choose 2 numbers that held some kind of meaning to them and traced them into a composition. To create the saturated color you see demonstrated our artists used tempera paint in 3 different viscosities. Tempera cakes were used to create an underpainting and to follow our 5th grade artists used tempera paint sticks to add saturation to their background and outline their numbers. Liquid tempera was then used to carefully paint their numbers using different types of applications.

We have had quite a year so far and there is still so much to come.

Welcome back!

Hello my amazing Farmingville Families!

Welcome back to what is going to be out best year yet. I have so many wonderful lessons planned and I am hoping that my Farmingville Artists will be just as excited about what we will be creating this year as I am. To welcome us back to school our students and teachers alike created paper fish inspired by Linda Kranz's book "Only One You". When you come through our halls please take a look!

The book will also be used as inspiration for a permanent art installation (more info to come) that every child will get to be a part of, and I can't wait to for us to get started.

2^nd Grade

 Polar Bears

Farmingville’s 2^nd Grade artists were inspired by the winter weather and created these fantastic Polar Bear paintings. Before they began they first learned some fascinating facts about these Arctic giants and what makes them so spectacular.

To create their art work students used overlapping shapes to map out the overall shape of their bear. They then used a dabbing technique to apply the paint and used printing techniques and oil pastels for the snowflakes. Students used cut painted paper to collage and “dress-up” their Polar bears a little- outfitting them with hats, scarves and sometimes mittens!

Weavings!

Every year I do weaving with various grade levels. While the projects are changed up the principals and techniques taught are the same and with each grade level a new challenge is added. 

In first grade, students created a background for their artwork with cool colors. They then drew fish that would act as the WARP for their weavings. They added the WEFT and used painted paper to add fins to their fish and seaweed to their backgrounds.

Second graders created painted paper weavings. To create the paper that would function as the WARP they first experimented with different kinds of lines and colored between them with crayon filling the entire paper. We then created  paintings with tempera cakes that we cut up…yes... cut up to use for our WEFT. For added interest they then mounted their weavings on paper and added a design.

Third grade students explored the element of Form to create the Relief weavings displayed here. They first glued a grid onto a support background and then used construction paper- bending, folding and gluing as they went to turn their weavings in to a 3 dimensional work of art. Once the initial weaving was completed many students added additional decorative elements into the warp and weft of their weavings to create added interest.

Our 4th grade Farmingville artists are off to a great start this year. They have been exploring Expressionism and how Expressionist art tried to convey emotion and meaning rather than reality. Each artist had their own unique way of "expressing" their emotions in their art. In order to express emotion, the subjects are often distorted or exaggerated. At the same time colors are often vivid and shocking. We looked at Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and created out own scream inspired artwork using photography, digital media, paint and oil pastels. 

To compliment our "Scream" project 4th grade artists created "I Am" poems and added color and interest using tertiary colors.
