Star Wars meets Picasso...

For their art exploration into Picasso, 4th and 5th grade students learned about the different “periods” of Picasso’s work and for this project, focused on Picasso’s cubist works. For their subject matter students searched…
“In a Galaxy Far, Far Away”.

4th Grade
Farmingville’s 4th graders warmed up for the project by playing a “roll a picasso head”, a drawing activity that has a die along with a chart that illustrates different parts of a face- picasso style. Students roll the die and create a drawing based on the number indicated. They focused on the elements of shape, line and color to create their abstract works.

For their STAR WARS inspired piece, students selected 3-5 index cards and drew features or parts of features (zooming in) on their cards using colored sharpie markers and added color with twistables. They then placed their cards on a large piece of paper and traced where they would be.
They took the cards off and then drew their character in the cubist style using oil pastels, layering and blending their colors. Once complete students collaged on their index cards and traced them with black oil pastel and added any additional outlines to add emphasis to their work.

5th Grade

5th graders also created abstract cubist portraits of a Star Wars character of their choosing. They used oil pastels to draw their characters and layered and blended different colors to create the desired effect.

5th graders took special notice of using lines and outlines for added emphasis and once complete cut out their portrait leaving a thin outline that showed the color of their original paper. They glued their cut portrait on black and used rubbing plates to add additional interest to their backgrounds. Students then added the name of their character to their piece with attention to the shape and proportion to balance their composition.
